If you mean the input and output of peripherals and other devices, the Device Manager is a good way to monitor the statuses of what is hooked up to your device. In windows7, clicking on your start menu, right clicking on "Computer" and then clicking "manage" takes you to a master device manager menu where you can select and view information about many different devices, from your mouse to your speakers to your graphics card.
