You adopt a rat that has been recently weaned, and buy a rat cage. Rats like reasonably big cages, with more than one floor and lots of space to climb in. You should also buy a water dispenser and rat food, which is available from almost all pet stores. You would also do well to buy bedding, wood shavings are best, but scented varieties can cause respiratory problems in rats. A bottle that is attached to the outside of the cage with a dripper inside is the best way to make water available for your rat, this should always be full of fresh clean water. Every now and then, tap the water dispenser to make sure there are no blockages. A food bowl that is attached to the cage is best, but a nice heavy food bowl is fine. Fill this with rat food, and give the rats fresh food every now and then to keep them happy and healthy. Also, to keep your rat social, play with it. Hold it and stroke it until it is happy being with you. Enjoy your new pet! :)

The main effect is the death of the rats. However, be careful if you have pets. Put the poison in protected places, so that your pets remain safe.
Quite a few Urban communities have rats for pets, including the USA.

Pet rats are not vermin. Pet rats are raised in a pet store, laboratory, or adoption center and they are raised to be pets or in the case of labs, experiments. if you are thinking of buying a rat remember not to buy a rat raised as food for snakes. Rats bred to be pets are much gentler and sweeter than rats raised as food.
Rats can be good pets for responsible children with adult supervision. They are intelligent, social animals that can form strong bonds with their owners. However, they do require regular care and attention to ensure their well-being.
