3-4Gb of RAM is about all you need. more RAM will just go unused unless you are doing a lot of 3D modeling (which im guessing your not).

Less than 3Gb is not recommended as it may slow down your computer and RAM is cheap enough.

If you are buying a computer with a Core i7 processor, then make sure the amount of RAm is a multiple of 3 (3 or 6Gb)

You're question is oddly worded, but by the looks of it, it seems you're looking into how much RAM your computer can hold. It depends on how many RAM slots your motherboard has. If it has 2 slots it has a maximum capacity of about 16gbs? If it has 4 slots, then about 32gbs. All you really need is 16gbs max anyway...

One way to analyze a computer to find out how much RAM it needs is by using a software scanner designed for the purpose, such as Crucial System Scanner. The Crucial website also offers RAM upgrades for purchase and a forum for users to ask questions about memory issues.

Check with your computer manufacturer or computer manual. You can also do an internet search on your particular computer model number and can find the RAM type that way.
