Chapter 1: The kiddy and fun way. Okay, don't kill me! I do the same thing. Except, it's not a real site, instead, I use shapes and spell save pictures and paste them from the internet. Search on the person, or something, and um it's not real. And I send it, though my E-mail, on my computer to whomever, like, a family member who does the same thing with you. Or a friend, like that kinda thing....: ( Chapter 2: Helping with real sites. Alright so, didn't work out for ya? Well maybe this will! Okay, so, let's say, your down angry even. After you read chapter one? But then when you 2 you're great. Cause it says.... 1: Didn't work out? 2: Think of suggestions; write it down on a piece of paper.3: After you come up with the idea of your site, make it in paint on your computer. 4. Done? What to do? Then you call this thing that helps you make a site. (Google it) 5: Follow directions, blah- blah, have a zip code, phone num, Address, a name and last name, whatever they ask. 6. Start designing you're site after those questions are done.Chapter 3: Options for your site!
When you are a blogger, designer or just a regular internet surfer you visit a lot of websites on a daily basis. Sometimes you can reach requested page within a second, some pages take more time to be shown properly. When you look for a phrase in Google, you notice that some pages are at the top, while the other ones that sometimes have better content are not even on the first page. If you are curious why it is like that, you begin to check the data, that can give you an answer to that.
What you need to do is to check some figures in different areas to give you a full picture of the website in question.
First thing you want to check is the statistic for this page and page rank. These are the most common areas in your exploration and sometimes it is enough.
If you own a website those tools can give you a pretty good idea of where your page stands with comparison to your competitors. You need to keep in mind though that the data is sometimes not accurate and it can vary from one service to another, depends on a method which is used. You are probably checking Google Page Rank and Alexa site, but there is more to it and I will try to list some of the tools you can use here.
Let's start with the first thing you check:
Traffic
The most popular tool for traffic measurement is Alexa. Alexa is a provider of free global web metrics. You can check some of the most successful sites based on the country, category or keywords.
It collects the data from it's toolbar users and the data obtained from other traffic data sources.
As I mentioned at the beginning such tools can be used as a reference only, to get more precise data you should probably use Google Analytics for example.
One of the latest tools is Compete. It combines site and search analytics on one site and is very helpful when planning marketing campaigns. It can show you how your competitors are keeping their users online and how they attract new ones. You can check their age, income and gender, this will help you to be more precise in planning a campaign. What is also great about it is that you can search for keywords that are driving the most traffic to your website. This is very helpful when planning SEO campaigns and helps to attract customers.
Loading time
It is quite important to be able to access your website quickly. If it is not loaded almost right away, you start wondering if your connection is good, or if the website is temporary down. Then you most likely click refresh to try to open it faster.
There are tools for that as well, you can see what is slowing down your website and make respective changes.
One of them is called Pingdom Tools, which allows you to run a full page test to analyze the speed of your website and to learn how to make it faster. You can also run DNS test as well as check Ping and Traceroute. This tool is helpful for webmasters and webdevelopers, it shows all parts of your website like HTML, CSS files, images and Java Scripts. In addition, you get the results in a nice and easy to understand graph with lots of stats for you to consider. You can save your performance and track history, this way you can see if your actions helped improving the site performance. All tests are performed with real web browsers, so your results are exactly the same as the end user ones.
Next tool is a bit simple but it basically covers the same area as Pingdom Tools. It is located on the Uptrends page. It is a Full HTML web page-test tool. It lets you test complete HTML Pages on your website with all objects inlcuded. It will download all the objects from your page and show respective loading times for each of them. Thanks to this solution you can easily check which parts of your website can be optimized for better performance and loading time. If you have too many images on your website you can either remove them or resize them. To be able to test your website, you simply need to enter URL of the page you want to test.
Webhosting
Sometimes when you see a certain website that is running smoothly and has a very fast load time, you can wonder who is hosting this page. It is especially useful for websites that experience heavy traffic and still have a very smooth operations time and good performance.
One of the pages that give you an opportunity to check some information about the domain is Whois.Net You have couple of tabs there where you can search for the information you need. in WHOIS lookup, you can check who registered a domain, see name servers, when the domain was created and when it expires. You can perform similiar search but use keywords. Then you will get a list of all domains that contain the keyowrd you specified. Whois.net also allows you to check for the domains that are available, by entering a name of a requested domain. If you see that the requested domain is available, you can purchase it directly there. On this page you can also check if the previously registered domains are now free. Only thing you need to do is to type it in the respective window.
Other page that has this type of data available is Whoishostingthis.
It gives you an opportunity to check who is hosting requested website and to go to this registrar page directly. It also shows you IP address of the website as well as name servers. On this website you can also read hosting providers reviews, compare them and even earn money by writing a review on the hosting company. On this page you can also find coupons from some of the providers that give you discounts.
Website value
Sometimes you are wondering how much your website is worth. There are tools that can give you an estimation and some additional information about it. One of such tools is Cubestat. Apart from the data like website value, daily revenue and daily page views, it can give you precise information available for the domain. There is data like Alexa rank, Google page rank, IP address and where the site is hosted. You can also find some other information as well.
Other page that is interesting and funny at the same time is Web Arbiter.
First it gives you a small general overview of the page in question. You can see if your webpage is popular on a global scale, within your industry, what is the global rank and local position of the website. It also shows the quality of your website based on Google. As other websites, it shows you IP address, hosting location and what server it is using.
I mentioned that it is funny, the reason for that is that apart from the money value of your website, you can also see how many camels or beer bottles it is worth. Something interesting to answer, if someone asks you how much your page is worth.
General and more social information
There are also pages that give you other types of information apart from the hosting location, page rank, etc. Quark base gives you the opportunity to see tags for your website, who is the key person (including their business profile) as well as social activity. It shows you latest tweeets, keywords from other blogs but also your latest blog posts. It is interesting since you can see how you are using Twitter and blog posts and how they are shown.
Last tool I'd like to describe is Domain Tools.
You can search there for information on a current domain, if you know its name, use search to find information about domain owner or search for domains you would like to buy.
Once you have a domain you want to check, you get results in different tabs.
First tab is a Whose record where you can check server names, domain expiration date and some more small details.
In the Site Profile tab you can see page meta description, page rank, SEO Score links and similar domains.
Registration window is where you can find information about the registration for this domain as well as other TLD's.
Last window is a server stats window, where you can see server location, IP addresses and domain status.
Thanks to the solutions above you will be able to check important data about your website, which will help you in optimizing performance, seo, design and give better customer experience. You can use them anytime you want and follow the history, to see if your actions helped.
