Open the file in MS Office 2010 and save the file in compatibility mode.
It will convert the file, remove the Compatibility Mode designator, and retain the file extension to .doc.
It will say "[Compatibility Mode]" in the title bar after the file name.

Did you try to install it in compatibility mode & run the program in compatibility mode as well?
Damage
Go to "Program Files >> Illusion Softworks >> Hidden & Dangerous 2" or whichever directory you installed it under and find the application file named "hd2". Right click, properties, compatibility tab and run in compatibility mode for XP SP2. You're good to go
