While 10.5.x may not be subject to the myriad of malware and viruses which target Windows, vulnerabilities are known for Quicktime, Java, and some Adobe products (Flash and Reader). The best defense against these vulnerabilities is to update your software updates regularly (10.5.8 is the latest version of 10.5), patch all third party software, and never work out of an account with administrative privileges.
Some of the vulnerabilities will allow for privilege escalation, and if you are logged in as an admin, then the attacker also has those rights. By working out of an account which can not make changes to the hard drive (and hence, the system), you mitigate this risk and usually the only data which can be altered is that within the user folder - so make backups.
Apple also provides security configuration manuals for 10.5 and 10.6 - search their support page.
