I will suggest that although some people think rats are dirty, filthy, disgusting, stupid, and ugly, and oh that hairless tail, and while you think hamsters and gerbils are way cuter, then I need to infer you that domestic rats are very sanitary. As a pet, they are very clean and sanitary, can be trained to use the litter box, are low-maintenence, are extremely intelligent and smart, and are very gentle, so they make good pets, oh, and can also easily learn tricks. However, I personally love all vertebrate animals, from snakes to rats. So I think, especially fancy rats, are cute, adorable, warm my heart, and are quite beautiful, and I even think the hairless ones are too! Just stay away from the wild ones. The wild ones will not want to be locked up in a cage, and should never be handled or touched, although they probably won't bite, the wild ones ONLY may have parasites on their skin or fur. Pet rats are very safe, and may have also got their shots from a vet or breeder, and I think pet store owners would breed it in captivity, where it will be fearless and healthy! On the bottom line, I LOVE RATS, ATLEAST THE PET ONES!
They don't bother me personally-at least the domesticated ones although hamsters are cuter for pets and less likely to escape, but it's not safe to handle one in the wild since they are very dirty creatures and can have fleas or mites as well.
