That varies greatly. If someone gives you one, then it cost nothing but the electricity, any upgrades and repairs, and the software. You might find a computer in a thrift store for $50 or less, while you may be able to find a new one somewhere anywhere from $200 on up. To have a top of the line mainstream computer would be about $1000 to $1500, while the best possible gamer system will run much more. So the question is how much computer do you want?

The cost depends on the specifications of the computer. But, in average the cost of a computer varies from Rs. 20,000/- to Rs. 25,000/-. It is better to bye a assembled product than a branded machine. The basic parts for a computer are as follows:

1. A motherboard or a chipset.

2. A processor.

3. A RAM suitable for your motherboard.

4. A cabinet for attaching the motherboard and other parts.

5. A SPMS for the power supply.

6. An optical drive of your choice like CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW.

7. A hard drive for the memory device.

8. A keyboard+ mouse of your choice.

9. A monitor of your choice.

10. A speaker.

Between £15 and £700 or $30 to $1200 for a second hand one. Between £300 and £20,000 for a new one. General price guide: £15: Dead loss. This might turn on and do a few basic tasks; but not really any use. £100: Older operating system; not compatible with modern technology. £300: Basic operating capabilities; able to run any program but might be noticeably slower on big jobs like image editing and saving. Could be hard to connect to the internet. Games and movies will run slowly and with impaired graphics £500: Standard computer; can run any program, big tasks take time but work alright. Games playable, movies perfectly watchable. £700: Powerful Computer; Can run any program, processes run faster. May have hardware accelerators which make films, games and 3D graphics much more realistic. £1,500: Geeks computer. Very fast, can do any task. £20,000: Specialised computer; Super fast, highly efficient. Aim to spend £500 or $800 for a decent computer. Have a look at this page- it allows you to specify a budget and your requirements and suggests computers based on it. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/editorial/Desktops_homepage/?int=top_nav Click on "PCs & Monitors Packages".
