No, sorry. You can use it to get your hair to clump and look like dreads, but true dreads result only when your hair locks. Then again, if you want to start the process, use twisting wax. Or beeswax. Just go to a hair supply store (like sally's) and they should have something like that in the black hair care aisle.

Can you use bar soap as a shampoo substitute for soft dreadlocks?

Extremely soft dreads are easy without a bar soap, using baking soda and herbs for wash and vinegar and herbs as a rinse. (See links).Bar soaps which are good for dreads include any all-natural soaps without residue; however, products containing SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) or SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) are not recommended.Baking soda works better then any soap, though.if you mean bar soap like dove the answer is yes and no..you can use any soap, but it is not best tothe reason being most soaps leave residue, soap scum, this builds up in dreads and is hard to removeyoung dreads this will slow even prevent dreading, but mature dreads are able to not be harmed except for the buildup of scum.incidentally, this is the reason dread wax never made sense. dread wax is residue that never comes out of dreads and is water proof.residues and dreads are not a good combinationif its a specific type of bar soap, post the ingredients in the products forum (adding new links to products, and the wax issue)the rule of thumb is..use as natural as can be, with the least residuesthe baking soda cleans twice as good as any soap though

Do some people use dread wax to twist their free forming dreads so they will lock up?

Personally, I don't use wax and i have been growing mine for a couple weeks now. I've heard that they leave over smelly residue..but I guess it depends on what type you get. I think it's better to grow them naturally..

Is hairspray good for dreads?

No. Dreadlocks are like little sponges and they absorb everything you put in them. Hairspray is bad for hair in general, but the problem with dreadlocks is that if you hairspray them you won't be able to get it out of the dreads properly after that. There will always be some residue somewhere inside the dread. That is why you want to use products that are as natural as possible on them. also this is why dread wax makes no sense at all.

Can you use a substitute for dread wax and shampoo?

Dr. Bronners is an awesome substitute for dread shampoo and it has hemp which is good. It is residue free and is highly concentrated so it lasts forever. You could also just use any shampoo that is residue free, but ALWAYS stay away from conditioner.better then any soap or shampoo is baking sodamix 1/3 cup with a gallon of water pour over your head (no scrubbing needed) allow to soak 10 minutes or more..up to 30rinse willnever use wax periodwax never comes out of dreadsuse pure aloe gel instead, or nothing.dread wax slows dread progressit makes almost all waxy dreads get cut in under 5 yearswaxy dreads tend to mold as wax traps water and dirtaloe vera rinses right out so wont build up like wax
