Yes your computer is using energy while sleeping. Also Screensavers don't save energy. The best way to "sleep" your computer is make it Hibernate. While hibernating your session is saved to your ram (or hard drive) make start up fast when you need to use it. Also when ANY appliance is plugged in it still uses energy even when off.
