Probably because of the number of population, weather conditions, amount of imports or exports with merchandise. Like if there is a ton of people, there is going to be a ton of automobiles going in and out of towns across water. With weather conditions, that bridge needs to handle the weather that city handles all year. Amount of imports goes along with the first question really, with the amount of vehicles going across that bridge. New York City is a very busy place, thats why their bridge is huge, I'm guessing. To support all their everyday activities/weight.
