If you define a set of parameters that are critical to the operation of something, then the operating envelope is the space between the minimum allowed and maximum allowed values for each parameter.
For example, if you buy a TV set and the manufacturer's specifications may say that the following limits exist:
Ambient temperature minimum = 0 degrees C
Ambient temperature maximum = 50 degrees C
Supply voltage input minimum = 100V AC
Supply voltage input maximum = 125V AC
Supply frequency minimum = 59 Hertz
Supply frequency maximum = 61 Hertz
The operating envelope as a function of Temperature, Voltage and Frequency is then (0-50,100-125,59-61). Any set of values where all of the individual parameters are each within those ranges is part of the operating envelope.
Any number of parameters can be used to define an operating envelope. If there is just one, it is easy to show on a line graph. If there are two, a two-dimensional graph is needed. If there are three, a volume must be shown in a 3-dimensional graph. If there are more than 3, other techniques must be used.
The layout option is where you can choose that you are printing on an envelope. Microsoft Word also has templates that allow you to see how it would look on an envelope.
