Dumb terminals are systems which lack core components of a normal computer and rely on a server or cluster system that provides the calculations and processes to emulate a services or operating system.

In many cases dumb terminals can increase security, decrease power usage and centralize desktop loads because everyone has a uniform desktop and allows anyone to use anyone's computer and have the same function all the time.

Dumb terminals had a height of popularity back in the early days of computing but with computer actualization becoming more commonplace they are experiencing a resurgence of popularity as a method of cost saving and maximizing resources on existing platforms.
