A back out procedure is commonly used to revert a piece of software that has been upgraded or converted to something new, this ensure's that if the software fails or becomes corrupt you will be able to revert the software back to the existing version before the update / conversion was done, allowing you to still use the software and plan out, where the problem went wrong, and what needs to be done :)
