When a multiple choice test is answered, a pencil mark is drawn in a small area (often looking like this [ A ] before completion) on an answer sheet to indicate the chosen response. The sheets are then fed into a machine which automatically reads the position of these marks, relays this information to a computer which interprets the data, processes it against a programmed data base and produces a response. In a test, the result is displayed as marks or a percentage. The system can also be used to compile reports or supply a fast way of entering numbers for a lottery draw.
The machine that reads the sheets is called an Optical Mark Reader (OMR for short). It works by light reflecting off the paper being picked up by a sensor. Where there are marks, less light is reflected and the relative position of the mark indicates the answer given. The position of the marks is calculated with the help of fixed marks on the paper which indicate the origin point. Some machines are programmed so that it doesn't matter which way round the paper is inserted, it still gives the desired data.
The system does rely on the use of specific forms: blank paper with lots of pencil dots is not an option!

A keypad is an input device.

Technically speaking, it isn't any more of either than your finger is an input device, or your lips an output device. The screen that the stylus is used on is both an input or an output device, sensing pressure from the stylus and displaying images as a result.

The full form of MICR is Magnetis Ink Character Reader.
Symmetic multiprocessing is about having multiple CPUs. It is an architecture or design rather than a device.

Web-cams are input devices.
A scanner is an input device because it sends (or 'inputs') information to the computer.

It is an input device.
Your input device, for example a mouse, is connected to your input medium, your computer. an input device is a device that is used to input or helps to enter data into the computer and an input medium is where the input device is detected e.g the slots
