The first home computers could do anything any other computer could, if you could fit it in their tiny memories.

However the first electronic computers in the 1940s and 1950s had exactly the same problem, very tiny memories.

As computers the first home computers were horrible, they had almost no memory and almost no storage, they had very limited and slow CPUs, etc. In fact many people in high positions in the computer industry of the time considered them useless, impractical, and "just toys" and believed they were a dead end and that market was not worth entering. However they successfully brought the computer into a new market that the more expensive and powerful "real computers" of the time could never have entered.

How is the first home computer different from the computers that are in our homes now?

The first "home computers" were more hobbyist computers than home computers. You really had to be more interested in them as a hobby that was going to consume much of your time rather than as a tool that was going to be useful. Many of them came in kits with inadequate instructions that you would have to assemble using a soldering iron, hopefully you made no mistakes! The first one I saw advertised in an electronics magazine was called the Mark-8 using the Intel 8008 microprocessor. You could order a package including the schematics, PC board artwork, and parts list (you had to etch the boards yourself and buy the parts on your own) or you could order a set of already etched boards (you still had to buy the parts on your own). The Mark-8 had no I/O devices, so you would have to improvise these!
