the control unit, which directs and coordinates most the operations within the CPU, and the arithmetic/logic unit (ALU) which performs arithmetic, comparison, and logical functions. These two components work together to perform processing operations.

The arithmetic and logical operations (ALU) and the control unit (CU) are the two main components of the CPU. The CU takes instructions and executes them while the ALU performs arithmetic operations and simple logical tests.

There are actually 3 parts:

The A.L.U. (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) which performs all the calculations.

The Control Unit - which controls the flow of data round the computer by sending out control signals.

Memory - which is used to store data.

Hope it helped

Main Memory (MM) and the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
· Control - This decides which process is being made. It sends signals to the different multiplexors to choose which output will happen. · Registers - Small local storage areas, used to store data about to be manipulated. These vary in size and number depending on the processor. Once 16 bit, now commonly 32 bit, and in the future 64 bit will become more common. They can store numerical values or other data including memory addresses and machine-language instructions. · Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) - Performs all mathematical operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, logical bit shifting. · Multiplexors - Select input or output from a number of possible values. These are used to decide input and output in the CPU. · Cache - Not always present, but can enhance CPU performance by storing regularly-used values for fast retrieval.

Two basic components of a CPU? Most people that I work for in my computer repair business call the tower a CPU. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. This is actually the microchip that sits in a slot on the motherboard, and has a heatsink/fan sitting on top of it to cool it. The two main components of a computer are the motherboard and the hard drive. That being said, you must have memory chips and a DVD drive, power supply to supply electricity, and an operating system to make it all work. Hope this helps you understand.
