The most common security issue of computer security today is lack of AWARENESS, we are falling behind in awareness of computer security's understanding.

computer security the common issues

  • No Antivirus, Dummy ineffective antivirues or no regular updates
  • No Operating system patching.
  • No Firewalls enabled or properly configured
  • Weak password containing easy combination or easy answers to security questions.
  • Phishing attacks
  • Lack of Backup or No backup of systems
  • Providing sensitive information online for registration of social networking and other websites, which match your personal details matching your bank and other sensitive information.

Prevention:

  • Evaluate your Antivirus before purchasing and installing. Ask as expert which antivirus is good.. I normally use Kaspersky internet Security as home user. The good thing is that if you have online Barclay's account they will provide you one year free license valid upto 3 computers. All you have to do is ask them online banking details and then login to your page for Kaspersky Internet Security offer. Also HsbC bank gives one year free Norton 360 and so other banks
  • Visit regularly your operating system websites and install regular updates and patches to keep your operating system updated and patched against Bugs, security holes and virues known to your operating systm vendor. Normally you just click windows update for windows patching.
  • Install a firewall and make sure you update your firewall regularly. Most of antivirus solutions are equipped with firewalls, make sure you enable firewall. When firewall detects some communication between you and outside world, it pop ups a message now make sure you only allow the programs you trust, wrong selection could result in surprises
  • While choosing a password make sure that the password is combination of smallandCAPSletTeRwithNuMeriCal343 Values.. and don't use same password for Facebook and your bank security questions please. Also Change your password frequently, don't let your password old over 6 months time.
  • Phishing is very common security threat, you receive an email from someone in Africa trying to transfer you billions, a link in email asking registration for free gifts, a PayPal email asking you to validate information and so on.. list is too long.. All you need to do is check two things. 1: Make sure that you really need to visit the site you are going to click on. 2: When you take mouse pointer on link of webpage, it should show same address on status bar. Phishing techniques ask you to click on www.abc.com but check in status bar it will be taking you to www.xyz.com site.. which is different from the site actually dispalyed above.
  • Use regular backup of your system into external harddrive or Pendrive depends on capacity and importance of data. In windows you can use windowsbackup..
  • Do not disclose any information on social networking websites, as these websites replicate data with other websites. Even though you delete your information from one website does not mean that data is removed from Internet the data remains on Internet as it get replicated with other websites. Also never give correct date of birth and other sensitive personal information while registering on websites for email or other social activities online.

Hope that will be helpful.
