There are approximately 500m servers in the world as of April 2010.
File servers do those things. There are specialized servers as well, for example web servers, database servers, remote access servers, fax servers--the list goes on and on. But file servers are the backbone of providing access and managing files and who has access to what resources at which times.BTW. Access to the network is usually referred to as Authentication. And Rights or Security Management is usually what controls access to files, printers, and other resources.
Web hosting sites provide a variety of services. They include providing space on a web server to keep files of internet websites. They also provide the ability to access these files through the internet. They manage the servers and keep them in an appropriate environment to ensure that they are always available for access.
The servers are designed to protect the users personal information. However, the servers are only as good as the encryption on them and a dedicated hacker could potentially gain access to your personal data that is stored on the server.

Most servers have what's called a RAID-5 array. Some examples of servers are network servers which allow many computers to use the same network, game servers which are used by game companies and allow thousands of people to play their game at the same time, and telecom servers which control your phone service and possibly your cable service.
Dedicated servers are more secure than shared servers. On shared servers anyone is able to access the server, whereas with dedicated servers, only those who are authorized can access the server.
E-Mail, FTP, & Web Servers all use DNS Servers to find clients and servers!

Unfortunately, yes there are people who run private servers for world of warcraft. Keep in mind that these servers could be several patches behind the live official servers, and the Game-Masters of these servers follow no rules unlike the official servers. The economy of the private servers is nearly non-existent because of the amount of people on them compared to the official servers.
