Static IP addresses are manually assigned to a computer by an administrator. The exact procedure varies according to platform. This contrasts with dynamic IP addresses, which are assigned either randomly or assigned by a server using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Even though IP addresses assigned using DHCP may stay the same for long periods of time, they can generally change.

The IP address is generated by the Server your computer is connected to. This can be either a fixed IP (so you have the same address every time you log-on to the internet) or a mobile IP (because you might be connecting via a Wi-Fi connection away form your home).

To get an IP address on a particular system on a local home network you go to your internet connection details or just type ncpa.cpl in run and it will be listed under IPv4 or IPv6 depending on what kind of network you have. If you want to figure out the IP for the router that will be listed under default gateway, you can check it either by ipconfig in cmd or from whatismyip.com .

Is it illegal to give out an IP address when requested by the owner of the system at it?

I don't exactly understand to whom you want to give you your IP address, but the IP address is not a great secret. Any communication that gets out of your computer includes your computer's IP address, because that is the address to which the other computer must reply.I don't exactly understand to whom you want to give you your IP address, but the IP address is not a great secret. When must the ip address be used instead of the mac?

The ip address is used when another computer needs to connect to your computer or if you are hosting a site on your server. The ip address of your site will be the ip address of your computer. The IP address is used when communicating with another LAN (Local Area Network) across a WAN (Wide Area Network).

Does your IP Address chage when you change computers even though you havent changed where the computer is connected?

It depends on how your computer gets its ip address. If you have a static ip address. The answer is no, your ip address does not change. If you have a DHCP server in your network mostly likely you will get another ip address when you change your computer. There are some tricks but it's a too long story.

What do certain ISP's require for naming a computer?

They do not "name" the computer. They assign it a IP address. For example:192.168.1.1 is a IP address for a local router. We get our wide area Ip address from our ISP's DHCP server.
