A flatbed scanner is a type of scanner which uses a flat, glass surface for scanning documents. Some of its disadvantages are scanning is done page by page, too much desk space is taken and not suitable for film scanning tasks.

Flatbed plotters should be called flatbed CUTTERS these days, because anyone that has one is cutting on it.

There are two kinds of cutters: flatbed and roll-feed. A flatbed cutter holds the media stationary (usually by vacuum) and moves the cutting knife along both the x and y axes. A roll-feed cutter moves the knife along the x axis, and moves the media back and forth along the y axis.

The biggest advantages flatbed plotters have over roll-feed ones are precision and speed. The media can shift around on a roll-feed machine; if you're cutting a big item on a roll machine and it gets even slightly cocked, you have to throw the media away and start from scratch. Flatbeds can also cut rigid media, cloth, and even metal if you've got the right machine.

There are also disadvantages to a flatbed, three in fact. They're bigger than roll machines. They're much more expensive. And you can't cut anything bigger than will fit on the bed.

A flatbed scanner can scan larger documents, and without bending them. The downside is that it takes up lots of space.

You can open a book to any page and scan the page rather than needing to remove the page first.

You can scan any 3D object with a flatbed.
