Gatekeeper(boundary-spanning) is mainly used in innovation oriented organizations.. If the interface with the external environment(or internally) is not diffused than gatekeepers monitor the environment and translate the technical information into a form understandable to the research group.

If the interface is more diffused then individuals are responsible for the interactions.
