The top part is the United Kingdom's flag and the bottom part is a setting sun. it was originally the other way around, but they changed it because there was a saying that went "the sun never sets on the british empire."

Henry Hudson did sail under the British flag. In 1607 and 1608 he sailed for the British flag. In 1609 he sailed for the Dutch flag. His final voyages were in 1610 and 1611 when he sailed for the British flag again.
Really? We were not a country yet in 1690, so there was no U.S.A. flag!! We were under either British, Spanish, or French rule.

The same way it does today. It hasn't changed since 1850.
The United States flag in 1930 was very similar to the current flag. It had seven red stripes and six white stripes. However, the 1930 flag had only forty eight stars whereas today's flag contains fifty stars.
