The Mock Battle of Manila was executed by American and Spanish troops in 1898. In 1898, the last remnant of Spanish power was isolated and were completely surrounded inside Intramuros (Manila's walled city/fort) by Filipino revolutionary forces led by General Aguinaldo. Spanish land forces in the Philippines have been decimated and has been weakened to the point of inevitable collapse after losing countless battles with Aguinaldo's forces and has been under siege for several months inside Intramuros. But with the arrival of the American military in 1898 in the Philippine islands to take over the possession of the Philippines as a colony away from the Spanish, the Spanish and the Americans agreed to stage a mock battle outside Intramuros to satisfy the Spaniards' desire to "save their honor" by giving the perception and staging a conterfeit fight where an equal and fellow Anglo military force- the Americans- would "defeat" them and thus will have to capitulate but not to the inferior brown indios- i.e. Aguinaldo's Philippine revolutionaries. With the Americans conspiring with another imperial western power, the commander of the U.S. forces advised Aguinaldo to stay put and stand back while his troops face off and do "battle" with the Spaniards which of course was made to look genuine.
