Swift is Swift.. when Swift buys out another company, that company gets integrated into Swift Transportation. Some of the carriers Swift bought out includes:
Central Freight is a separate company from Swift, and is privately owned by Jerry Moyes, the founder and former CEO of Swift Transportation. He acquired it in 1997. Central Refrigerated was the company formerly known as Dick Simon trucking, and that was acquired primarily by Moyes circa 2001 (this is the company best known for its driver who drove his truck up the steps of the California state capitol). It was bought out and integrated into Swift in 2013.
Blue Thunder was related to either Moyes or Swift, although I'm not entirely certain. The company was formed in 2005 for the sole purpose of buying out Swift's autohaul division. They filed for bankruptcy in 2007.
Update:
In August of 2013, Swift formally bought out Central Refrigerated.
No. The connection between Knight and Swift was that Randy Knight was once an executive at Swift Transportation. Knight Transportation isn't owned by Swift.
No. Swift Transportation (not Trucking) derived its name from the Swift Meat Packing Company (another trucking company which did the same was JBS Carriers). The founder of Swift Transportation is a man named Jerry Moyes, who, to the best of my knowledge, has no relation to Taylor Swift.
Swift Transportation was founded by a man named Jerry Moyes. He remains the CEO of Swift Transportation (Swift is a publicly traded company).
Their shareholders. Swift Transportation of Phoenix, LLC. is traded on the NYSE as "SWFT'.
While there really isn't much of a publicly available database on this, the most major buyout Swift Transportation made was of M.S. Carriers in 2000 or 2001, IIRC. Another company they've bought out was Merit. They bought out Fulton Transportation in the early 90s, as well. Central Freight and Central Refrigerated aren't owned by Swift - they're privately owned companies which are owned in their entirety by Jerry Moyes, the CEO of Swift Transportation (whereas Swift Transportation is a publicly traded company). DSW trucks are often seen pulling Swift refrigerated trailers - DSW (Digby Southwest) is not owned by Swift - it is a fleet which leases onto Swift Transportation.
The name Swift as used in Swift Transportation is not derived from a person's last name - the CEO and founder of Swift Transportation is Jerry Moyes, who is of no relation to Taylor Swift that I'm aware of.
To the best of my knowledge, no.
They don't. Costco hires out third party trucking companies to move their goods. Swift Transportation is one of the primary contractors for them.
Most any company which has a refrigerated division should be willing to do it... Swift Transportation, Central Refrigerated, Knight Transportation, Martin, Schaffer, C.R. England, Landstar, and others.
Last I checked (which was a few years back, so the numbers may be different now) Swift Transportation (not Trucking) had somewhere in the vicinity of 18,000 power units.
Swift Transportation does have such a program. Then again, there are much better carrier who do, as well.
