Yes, and no. Freight trains travel in more of a straight line so they have less distance to travel between towns. However they also normally travel slower than trucks and when they arrive at their destination the cargo must be unloaded and trucked to the final destination. So in reality cargo moves faster by truck that by train but the cost to move it is less by train.
