All AX4S/AX4N Transmissions currently use MERCON V automatic transmission fluid. The previous specification was MERCON ATF but Ford recently released a Technical Service Bulletin stating that all MERCON ATF fluid would be replaced with MERCON V ATF as MERCON V ATF supersedes MERCON ATF specifications. The fluid you must use in Ford Taurus Power Steering Systems and Automatic Transmissions are now MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid.
All 1998+ Transmissions Takes MERCON V. DO NOT USE MERCON/DEXRON III IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR TRANSMISSION.Depending on transmission work done in the past, 1996+ Transmission may take MERCON or MERCON V.If in doubt, use MERCON V.
Fluid for that car is Mercon V. Not Mercon III as used in earlier cars, but Mercon V.
Depends on which transmission you have and if it is a Manual or Automatic. Some Ford manual transmissions use A/T fluid and some use Manual Lube. Below is a list of A/T's and what they use. Either Mercon or MV. Unless you have an owners manual which will tell you, or know the transmission you have, I suggest you call your local Ford dealer. Ford developed a new fluid starting in 1997 called Mercon V. This replaces Mercon on some transmissions but in 1997 only two. The 4R44E & 5R55E. All other transmissions use Mercon. Using the wrong fluid can cause problems. I suggest you look on the dipstick or in your owner's manual to see which fluid you need. If you cannot find the information there, call your local Ford dealer and be specific about your vehicle. Make sure they understand that Mercon V is only to be used in these 2 transmissions. You may need to crawl under the vehicle and see exactly which transmission you have installed. Do not just take someones word on this. Be sure they know or you may do harm to the transmission.
No. The Transaxle in a 1988-2006 Ford Taurus must use MERCON V. Both the AX4N and AX4S transaxle can ONLY use MERCON V. The power steering system also utilizes the MERCON V Fluid. The Power Steering system can ONLY use MERCON V.MERCON V is the latest MERCON Specification. All MERCON Fluids have been discontinued and replaced with the new MERCON V standard.IMPORTANT: Systems requiring MERCON V ARE NOTbackwards compatible with MERCON fluid. Do NOT use MERCON fluid in a system designed for use with MERCON V Fluid. However, Systems requiring MERCON fluid, can use MERCON V fluid. Ford issued a TSB stating that MERCON V supersedes(and surpasses) all MERCON requirements.
