Many problems can lead to this symptom. In order of probability:

  1. Tire noise, aggressive tread or uneven wear will cause noise that hums starting at about 30 to 40mph and gets louder and changes tone with speed. To repair replace tires and run the new ones at a higher pressure.
  2. Engine belts getting ready to fail,
  3. Drive shaft, u-joints, wheel bearings all make noises that start and get louder and change as road speed increases.
  4. Finally loose or damaged body work, bent or damaged wipers, add on body pieces can all start vibrating in the wind and hum going down the road.

I recommend you get someone who is familiar with these things to go for a ride. All these different causes make different humming noises and are fairly easy to diagnose once you have heard them before.
