There haven't really been any major surveys to find out just how many people read manga. One would guess that in Asian countries, especially Japan, manga is read by a large portion of the population, while in Western countries such as America and the United Kingdom, the number of manga readers would be much smaller.
If you want to get an idea of how many people in your area read manga, you could stand in a public place, such as a park or sidewalk (make sure you have permission to be there!) and ask people that or similar questions.

There are a wide variety of places where one can find and read web comics. The official website of Marvel has many different well known comics that one can read.

People read comics because it takes them away from reality temporarily, it gives them a sense of security and hope to undesirable occurrences in reality. Comics bestow a sense of confidence and empowerment to the reader, enables them to consciously grow in various aspects. The fantasy in comics becomes reality to the reader, thus breaking boundaries in the reader's mind.
