Just understand: A SEM can see anything you can see on a light microscope (with much better resolution) however, it often needs to be conducting, so it is usually sputtered in gold (likely not in forensics).
The main benefit of an SEM are the different detectors. Contrast between secondary and backscatter can give a really nice contrast for peaks and valleys etc, and the EDX detector can actually tell you if you have and what percentage of metal you have
