A shilling was a basic unit of English money up until the decimal pound was adopted in 1971. It was equivalent to 12 pence, or 1/20 of a pound sterling, and held the same place in the coinage system as today's 5p coin.
Most shillings were issued in 2 varieties. If yours has the lion sitting up on the crown and holding a sword and a sceptre, it was issued for Scotland. Those issued for England show the lion standing on the crown.
In any case these coins are not considered to be scarce, and sell for around £2 (about US$3.75) in extremely fine condition. Uncirculated specimens sell for about £4 in the Scottish variety, and £6 in the English variety.
