Sand dollars are echinoderms. They have a young larval stage that develops a hard bony structure while maturing. The sand dollars have seperate sex. They on maturing release the ripe eggs and sperm to get fertilized outside. After fertilization the egg develops into the young sand dollars which are very tiny floating creatures.
The first sand dollars formed during the period Paleocene. After that they diversified during the Eocene period.
