Virtually nothing is known about the childhood of Saint Nicholas of Myra. While he was still quite young both of his parents died in an epidemic. He was taken in by his uncle, also named Nicholas, who was a bishop. At a young age Nicholas was drawn to the religious life. His uncle tonsured the young Nicholas as a reader and later ordained him a presbyter (priest).
Legend has it that as a child, Saint Nicholas showed compassion and generosity. He inherited a sum of money and used it to help those in need by giving gifts and providing for the poor and sick. This spirit of giving and kindness continued throughout his life, leading to his reputation as the patron saint of children and sailors.
The most spectacular miracle credited to Nicholas was raising three young boys back to life who had been murdered and stuffed into a barrel of brine.
