A jogger might develop lactic acid in their muscles due to anaerobic metabolism during intense exercise. When the body cannot supply enough oxygen to the muscles, they break down glucose for energy without oxygen, leading to the accumulation of lactic acid as a byproduct. This buildup can cause muscle fatigue and discomfort.

A sprinter would build up more lactic acid, since the intensity of the effort would create a larger amount and the speed of the effort would allow less time for it to be removed through circulation. The most lactic acid buildup is seen, though, in anaerobic activities like strength training. This is what causes muscle"burn", especially in the leg muscles of weightlifters.

What happens when lactic acids builds up in your muscles?

None. There is almost no production of lactic acid in the muscle, pretty much all of it is in the form of lactate ions. They are not formed due to lack of oxygen, this is also a misconception, they are formed when the demand for ATP is too high to be met by phosphorilative oxidation, which produces more ATP per unit of glucose but does so at a slow rate.
