Zinc oxide is also known as philosopher's wool because it was historically made by heating zinc metal in an open crucible until it turned into a white powdery form, resembling wool. This process was often associated with alchemists and philosophers who were searching for the secret of turning base metals into gold.

How can obtain zinc from zinc oxide?

Zinc can be obtained from zinc oxide by a process called reduction. This involves heating zinc oxide with carbon or carbon monoxide at high temperatures to produce zinc vapor, which can then be condensed to form solid zinc. This method is commonly used in industrial processes to obtain zinc from zinc oxide.

What type of reaction is this 2ZnO plus C gives 2Zn plus CO2?

This is an oxidation-reduction reaction. The carbon reduces the zinc oxide to zinc and the zinc oxide oxidises the carbon to carbon dioxide. It can also be called a displacement reaction, as the carbon displaces the zinc from its oxide.
