The primary acid in acid rain is sulfuric acid, formed when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other sulfur compounds released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels react with oxygen and water vapor. Nitric acid is also present in acid rain, which forms when nitrogen oxides (NOx) released from vehicle emissions and industrial activities react with air.
