An atom consists of a heavy small nucleus in the center and electrons revolving around it. Nearly all mass is concentrated in the nucleus. The electrons are forming a cloud around the nucleus because they are moving with an enormous speed. Take an example of an atom of Carbon. It has 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the nucleus and 6 electrons revolving around it. Its mass is 12 atomic units and the it has a valency of 4.

The nucleus of carbon has a mass of 1.92x10^-26 Kg whereas the six electrons have a total mass of 9.11x10^-31 Kg. We can, in some cases ignore the mass of electros all together. On the other hand the size(radius) of the nucleus of carbon-12 is 2.7x 10^-15m and the size(radius) of an atom of C-12 is 1.7x10^-10m. The density i.e mass per unit volume of C-12 is 2.26x10^3 Kg/m^3 and the density of nucleus of C-12 is 1.7x10^17Kg/m^3.

Try calculating it by yourself. It is interesting.

Visualize if all the electrons were detached from the nucleus and we have a nuclear mass, how much heavy it will be?

Atomic nucleus is made up of neutrons ie chargeless particles and protons with positive charge on it. These are two main constituents. But these are held together so tight because of exchange of mesons in between them. So mesons too are there within the nucleus. Each neutron would split into a proton and an electron if such an opportunity occurs. Hence hidden electrons are there within each neutron. Generally energy has so many forms. Especially in case of nucleus it is apparent that energy is mostly seen as protons, neutrons and mesons.

Protons (they have a positive charge) and Neutrons (they have no charge);

This is true, except for the nucleus of Hydrogen which is only ONE proton, no neutrons in it; however Deuterium [Heavy Hydrogen] is a proton combined in the Atom's nucleus with a neutron and Tritium [Extra Heavy Hydrogen] is a proton combined in the Atom's nucleus with two neutrons.

Protons and neutrons and mesons.

Is nucleus smaller than atom?

An atom comprises an atomic nucleus with orbiting electrons. So the nucleus is smaller than an atom. To phrase it the opposite way, an atom is alwys larger than the nucleus (of the same atom of course!!)

What is inside the nucleus of an atom?

The nucleus of an atom contains neutrons and protons. Almost all of the mass in an atom is made up from the protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Because the nucleus is only made up of protons and neutrons, it is positively charged. Physicists believe that there is a cluster of Protons and Neutrons within an Atom's nucleus. Friend Premier is quite right. So instead saying inside the nucleus it would be apt to say that nucleus is made up of...

Is the center of an atom a neutron?

No, the center of an atom is the nucleus, which is made up of protons and neutrons. Neutrons are subatomic particles found within the nucleus along with protons.
