The function of soap in washing is to help break up grease and oil that water alone can't. Skin is always covered with a fine film of body oil to which bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt will adhere. Soap helps release this debris from the surface oil. Too much scrubbing with soap can remove all of the surface oil from your skin, leaving you skin feeling very dry.

When washing things other than yourself, if the object is very greasy, soap will actually work better than detergent to wash it if you don't have a grease cutting product. When I have a grease or oil stain on clothing, I will scrub the spot with warm soapy water before laundering it.

Soap functions by reducing the surface tension of water, allowing it to effectively dissolve and remove dirt, oil, and other substances from surfaces. Soap molecules have both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, enabling them to interact with both water and oils to lift away dirt and germs.

Why are detergents more effective than soaps for cleaning in hard water?

The reason detergents are more effective than soap for cleaning hard water has to do with their ingredients and their function. Most detergents have cleaning properties that are able to combat hard water and mildew. The function of soap, however, is less complex. The function of water is to make water even wetter than what it is. This does not necessarily mean it contains cleaning properties.

What does soap do to a cell?

Soap disrupts the lipid bilayer that surrounds the cell, causing it to break down and leading to the release of cellular contents. Soap works by binding to both water and oil molecules, allowing it to penetrate the cell membrane and disrupt its structure. Ultimately, this can disrupt cell function and lead to cell death.
