The combustion of coal is usually complex, as coal isn't a pure compound. But generally, the reaction of coal is as follows

C(s) + 02(g) ------> CO2(g) DH Negative

But often, sulphur is present is coal:

S(S) + O2(G) ----> SO2(g)

At those high temperatures, Nitrogen from the air and oxygen react as well:

N2(g) + 202(g) ----> 2NO2(g)
