Rhodium, from the platinum family, is a metal that does not tarnish. It is plated over silver so that you do not have to clean it as often. It is much shinier than silver though, a true lover of sterling silver may not like the shine of rhodium.

Rhodium plated sterling silver is sterling silver that has been coated with a thin layer of rhodium. Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum family that provides a shiny and durable finish to the silver, making it more tarnish resistant and giving it a white gold-like appearance. This plating enhances the beauty and longevity of the silver jewelry.

Anything plated with a precious metal, no matter how thick the plating, will never be hallmarked.Neither sterling nor silverplate is magnetic, unless the plating is over a steel or iron core, which is rarely the case.
