The sodium pump is actually known as the sodium potassium pump. Most cells in the body need to contain a higher concentration of potassium ions (K+) than their environment. They also need to contain a lower number of sodium ions (Na+) than their environment. To achieve this the cell constantly pumps sodium ions out and potassium ions in. This requires energy, and therefore is called active transport.

This is carried out by transporter proteins in the plasma membrane, working with ATP which supplies the energy. The ATP changes the shape of the transporter protein, the shape change moves 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ions in. This is called the sodium potassium pump.

A sodium-ion pump is a type of protein that actively transports sodium ions across a cell membrane, against their concentration gradient, using energy from ATP. This helps maintain cellular balance of sodium ions and is essential for various cellular functions such as nerve transmission and muscle contraction.

How does viscosity of a fuel oil affect the performance of fuel pump and injector in a diesel engine?

Higher viscosity fuel oil can make it harder for the fuel pump to pump the fuel through the system, leading to increased wear and potential damage to the pump. It can also affect the spray pattern and atomization of fuel in the injector, impacting combustion efficiency and engine performance. Lower viscosity fuel oil is generally preferred for better pump and injector performance in a diesel engine.

What moves in the sodium potassium pump?

In the sodium-potassium pump, three sodium ions are pumped out of the cell while two potassium ions are pumped into the cell. This movement is powered by ATP, which is hydrolyzed to provide the energy needed for the pump to function.

Why is it advisable to break the suction filtration before turning off the water pump?

Breaking the suction filtration before turning off the water pump helps prevent air from getting trapped in the system. Trapped air can cause the pump to lose prime and may lead to inefficient filtration or damage to the pump. By breaking the suction filtration first, you allow water to flow freely and avoid introducing air into the system when the pump is turned off.

What occurs during a single cycle of sodium-potassium exchange pump?

Three sodium ions are moved out of the cell for every ATP hydrolyzed by the pump. At the same time, two potassium ions are moved into the cell.

What provides energy that drives the sodium-potassim pump?

The energy for the sodium-potassium pump is derived from the hydrolysis of ATP molecules. ATP releases energy when its phosphate group is cleaved, providing the necessary energy to move sodium ions out and potassium ions into the cell through the pump.
