The atomic weight is the weight of an atom of the element compared with the weight of a single proton, and consists of number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom of that element, and different atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons, and therefore more than one atomic weight: it is usually given as an average. the atomic number on an element is simply the number of protons and electrons in the element. however, it is not the total number of them.
