A scientific theory begins as no more than a hypothesis about an issue. Scientific laws are hypotheses that have been proven. Proving an hypothesis involves the ability to accurately predict the outcome of reactions. Unproved scientific theories can be regarded as highly as a law if they have not been disproved over a lengthy period of time, when the means to adequately prove the theory are unavailable.

A scientific law is an assumed truth which forms the basis of your theory. Scientific laws are universal and describe observed events. Scientific theories use fundamental laws to logically form new ideas or explain new phenomena. The absolute best example I know of is the law of conservation of energy. This concept is an assumed truth that has never been wrong. Even though it is impossible to test its accuracy in every conceivable situation, the assumption that it is true has been the direct cause of the following discoveries and theories in physics:

- Entropy and the second law of thermodynamics

- Quantum mechanics

- Rest mass

- Most of the fundamental particles of the universe

- Fusion and fission

- The Solar modal

- Nucleosynthesis

- The Big Bang theory

- Maxwell's equations

And many many more.
