Coordinating colors look good together. But sometimes, using contrasting color(s) is visually interesting.

It depends. I took a class on color theory and this is what I learned.

Usually contrast colors like red and green, orange and blue, or purple and yellow look good together. I know it might sound weird, but sometimes it's true. I think yellow and purple are good together myself.

Also, the primary colors look great together: red, yellow and blue. Another way is to do the opposite of that and do secondary colors: purple, green and orange.

Complementary colors (opposite on the color wheel) like blue and orange or purple and yellow go well together. Analogous colors (next to each other on the color wheel) like blue, green, and teal also create a harmonious color palette. It's also a good idea to consider the mood or feeling you want to evoke with the color combination.
