Have you had a muscle cramp anytime? If you have had one, you will understand that it is very painful. The cause of the cramp might have had to do with a lack of sodium in your body. Most sports drinks, food stuff, common salt, has sodium which is essential to proper muscle and nerve functioning. So, sodium is good, right?

Sodium in excess can be very harmful. Although the exact amount that constitutes an excess is mired in controversy, folks with high blood pressure, kidney problems are advised to cut down on their intake of sodium.

Sir Humphrey Davy first discovered Sodium around the year 1807. It is soft metal that can be cut and molded easily. Sodium burns in air with a brilliant, yellow flame. Upon contact with water, Sodium reacts violently to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen. The heat of the reaction can sometimes cause the hydrogen to catch fire.

So, is sodium toxic? No if it as a trace element in the food, or as a part of a compound like the salt that we eat. Can you make a ring out the metal sodium and wear it to parties? Definitely not, unless you plan to burn your finger and everything around you.

Sodium itself is not considered hazardous or toxic, as it is an essential element in our bodies and in many foods. However, excessive intake of sodium, typically in the form of sodium chloride (table salt), can lead to health issues such as high blood pressure, Heart disease, and stroke. It's important to consume sodium in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
