An alchemist was boiling a very large vat of urine to try to obtain something he needed for an experiment (probably making the philosopher's stone). When he got it down to a very concentrated brine he transfered it to another container to let it dry and crystalize. He noticed that some of the crystals glowed (he did not know they were burning). He named the material "phosphorus" - "phos" = light - "phorus" = bearer.
