A pure substance has only one kind of atom or molecule.

A mixture has a number of different pure substances mixed together.

Salt- NaCl is a pure substance

Salt dissolved in water is a mixture of salt NaCl and water (H2O).

Sugar is a pure substance- sucrose

Sugar and cinnamon is a mixture of the 2 materials

In mixtures, the individual pure components can be separated - it may be difficult but it can be done.

How can you tell???

You have to stop and think about it. What kinds of materials are involved? If it is a pure component, it should only have one material/component.

Pure substances are made up of only one type of atom or molecule, whereas mixtures contain a combination of different substances that are physically mixed together but not chemically bonded. Pure substances have a defined chemical composition and properties, while mixtures retain the properties of their individual components.

Answer

A mixture is composed of two or more substances that are combined mechanically (as opposed to chemically). A pure substance will remain as it is no matter how fine it is divided. It's composed of "all the same thing" throughout its volume.

Note that the mixture can be two or more pure substances or two or more chemical compounds. A couple of examples are air, which is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen (and some other things), and something like, say, sand and sawdust. The former is a mixture of pure substances or elements, while the latter is a mixture of two substances that are "complex molecules" of different substances.

A pure substance is a substance containing only one type of atom or compound, like nitrogen or water. A mixture is a combination of multiple different substances. Homogeneous mixtures, also known as solutions, are mixtures in which the substances are distributed uniformly so that the properties would be the same no matter where you sampled it from. One example would be salt water. Heterogeneous mixtures are combinations in which things aren't mixed evenly and so have different properties when sampled from different places. An example of this would be a box of differently colored Legos or Chocolate Chips mixed with almonds.

Substances-

  1. Are homogeneous
  2. Cannot be broken down
  3. are pure

Mixtures-

  1. Are heterogeneous
  2. Can be broken down
  3. Aren't pure

Both-

  1. Both substances and mixtures are compounds
  2. Both substances have more than two atoms

Substances are divided into two classes?

Substances are divided into two classes: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are chemically uniform and cannot be separated by physical means, while mixtures are combinations of two or more substances that can be separated by physical processes.

Are there more pure substances or mixtures found in the world?

Mixtures are more common in the world compared to pure substances. Mixtures are combinations of two or more substances that can be physically separated, whereas pure substances are composed of only one type of substance and cannot be separated by physical means.

What do mixtures and pure substances have in common?

Mixtures and pure substances are both made up of different types of matter. However, mixtures contain two or more substances physically combined, while pure substances contain only one type of substance with a specific composition.

How do the two main classifications of matter differ?

The two main classifications of matter are pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are made up of only one type of substance with specific chemical properties, while mixtures are made up of two or more substances physically combined with variable composition and properties.

What 2 catigories can matter be divided into?

Matter can be divided into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are made up of only one type of atom or molecule, while mixtures are composed of two or more different substances that are physically combined.
