It is a chemical change. If the clothes are very dirty, allowing the whole thing to soak is a good idea. Let the washer fill, add the soap and allow it to agitate a couple of minutes and then shut it down for an hour or so.

Laundry detergent contains surfactants that lower the surface tension of water, allowing it to penetrate fabrics and lift dirt and oils away from them. The surfactants bind to the dirt particles and suspend them in the water, so they can be rinsed away during the washing process. Additionally, enzymes in the detergent can break down protein-based stains like blood or grass.

It is not necessary, but it would work better if you did. Laundry detergent is a substance that kills and dissolves bacteria. I did an experiment for which laundry detergent worked best on stains and tide works best. I also put in one other shirt in but with NO SOAP and it did not take off any of the stains ( i used chocolate sauce, mustard, soya sauce, and red wine). So if you want the best cleanliness for your clothes i would suggest Tide Laundry soap . A grade 7 project
