Not really sure if this is a positive answer but my science teacher told me to look at the periodic table and look at the group #. For example, Lithium is in Group 1 so it has 1 valence elctron.

Add them together to determine the number of valence electrons. Hydrogen has 1 valence electron, Hydrogen is also in Group 1 Helium has 2 valence electrons, although helium appears to be placed into group 18. Read about the amount of energy levels and electron rules. Sulfur has the highest energy level (the coefficient) = 3. The 3 has a s and a p with an exponent attached to it. The s has 2 and the p has 4. Add 2 + 4= 6 valence electrons for sulfur.

By looking at the group number... For the groups labeled with a B, if I remember the group number doesn't always tell how many valence electrons are in each atom, but in the groups labeled A it's a definite.

So just look at the group numbers and you'll be fine. :-P

each period (row) on a periodic table represents the outermost ring of electrons (valence electrons). Well if you count across a period you will get the number of valence electron. For example, if you count across a period for Oxygen (O atomic number:8) you will count 6 which is the amount of valence electrons in oxygen
