Without bonds the hydrogen and oxygen would come apart.

Hydrogen bonds are not the covalent bonds holding the hydrogen and oxygen together in a water molecule, they are the weak dipole bonds between the hydrogen side of the water molecule and other molecules (including the oxygen side of other water molecules). Some of the things hydrogen bonds in water do:

  • increase surface tension
  • make water a powerful solvent of ionic compounds
  • make water expand when cooled below 4C until it freezes at 0C
  • gives ice crystals their sixfold symmetry
  • etc.

Water is a very unusual compound because of its hydrogen bonds.

Hydrogen bonds between water molecules give water its unique properties such as high surface tension, cohesion, and ability to dissolve many substances. These properties are essential for life processes, transportation of nutrients in organisms, and maintaining temperature regulation in various environments.

Write the letter of each sentence that is true about hydrogen bonds?

A) Hydrogen bonds are weaker than covalent bonds. B) Hydrogen bonds form between a hydrogen atom and a highly electronegative atom. C) Hydrogen bonds are important in maintaining the structure of proteins and DNA. D) Hydrogen bonds are only found in water molecules. Correct sentences: A) Hydrogen bonds are weaker than covalent bonds. B) Hydrogen bonds form between a hydrogen atom and a highly electronegative atom. C) Hydrogen bonds are important in maintaining the structure of proteins and DNA.

Can water form hydrogen bonds form with itself?

Yes, water can form hydrogen bonds with itself. Each water molecule can form hydrogen bonds with up to four neighboring water molecules, resulting in a network of hydrogen-bonded water molecules, which gives water its unique properties like high surface tension and cohesion.

How is Hydrogen bond important to the body?

Hydrogen bonds are important in the body because they help stabilize the structure of proteins and DNA, contributing to their function. In DNA, hydrogen bonds hold the complementary base pairs together, enabling the genetic code to be accurately replicated and decoded. Additionally, hydrogen bonding between water molecules contributes to the unique properties of water that are essential for various biological processes within the body.

What type of bonds hold one molecule of water to another molecule of water?

Hydrogen bonds hold one molecule of water to another molecule of water. These bonds form between the partially positive hydrogen atom of one water molecule and the partially negative oxygen atom of another water molecule.

What kind of bonds give water it's important properties of adhesion cohesion and specific heat?

Hydrogen Bonds

How do bonds form between water molecules?

The bond between water molecules is known as a hydrogen bond.

What kind of bond does water commonly make?

Water is composed of molecular bonds, but forms hydrogen bonds with other water molecules. Hydrogen bonds are not actual bonds, but they cause an attraction between the water molecules, which is why water is adhesive.

What kind of bond gives water its important properties of adhesion cohesion and specific heat?

Hydrogen bonds are responsible for giving water its important properties of adhesion, cohesion, and specific heat. These bonds form between the slightly positive hydrogen atoms in one water molecule and the slightly negative oxygen atoms in neighboring water molecules, creating a network of intermolecular attractions.

Does glucose form hydrogen bonds?

yes it can when it dissolves in water in forms hydrogen bonds in fact its the one that has the most hydrogen bonds

When water evaporates do the covalent bonds between O atoms and H atoms break or do the hydrogen bonds break and why?

When water evaporates, it is the hydrogen bonds between water molecules that break, not the covalent bonds within each water molecule. The hydrogen bonds are weaker intermolecular forces that hold water molecules together. Breaking these bonds allows the water molecules to escape as vapor.

What is water-water bonds called in a beaker of water?

In a beaker of water, the bonds between water molecules are called hydrogen bonds. These bonds are formed between the positively charged hydrogen atoms of one water molecule and the negatively charged oxygen atom of another water molecule.
